LET’S GET AG SMART

Let’s build a system of agriculture in Iowa that relies on crop rotation, deep-rooting perennials, and more biodiversity. These systems are robust, have proven records of soil and water conservation, and integrate biological sources as fertilizer, and reduce the need for pesticides. Such a system would rely on less fossil fuel and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Imagine driving across Iowa, and passing orchards, sunflower fields, fields of fruits and vegetables, more animals on pastures rather than in confinement.  Imagine more canneries, more creameries, and more Iowa-grown products available in our grocery stores.

            >> The hemp plant adds biodiversity to Iowa's agriculture, and has six-foot-deep root system that kills weeds

and protects our soils. Iowans are creating secondary markets for hemp by producing hulled hemp seed,

hemp oil, and hemp protein powder, contributing to a healthy and sustainable food system.

Let's put solar panels on our barns, sheds, and other ag buildings, and more wind machines on our farmland.
